A movie that smartly makes fun of the way blacks are portrayed in books and the movies. It depicts how popular entertainment is produced and consumed.

What a great idea and so well presented. This film should have won more awards. Clever, topical, smart and hilarious.

There are not many filmmakers who would produce a movie that goes against the grain of current culture, but it is refreshing to see a different depiction of the black experience. So many films today are stuck in over-the-top stereotypes and tropes. This film calls those stereotypes and tropes to task. You'll find them, if you look, but they've been inverted, twisted, and turned on their heads. Fine acting, good cinematography, spot-on directing, interesting set design. Wait 20 years. This might become a classic.

A writer who is frustrated that his books don’t sell well. He stumbles on a book store reading by a fellow black writer giving a reading of her best selling novel. He hates her book because she is profiting on the stereotype of what white people expect from a novel of bad black people doing bad things. What follows is our writer coming up with his own terrible black stereotype novel, but it’s all just a joke. The joke is on him when publishers are offering big money for publishing rights and they’re sure the book will go to #1. From there, it’s simply hysterical!

Searching for an option for movie night with my husband, I opted to try this Oscar contender. I loved the performances of the characters who portrayed themselves as real, albeit flawed individuals. The ending of the movie provides much to think and talk about. I’ve recommended this movie to friends of different ages and all have enjoyed it.

Others have and will explain the particulars better than I but let me say that American Fiction is an exquisite blend of humor, insight, smarts, characterizations, and brutally correct social debunking at a level unheard from this or just about any other platform. This is one absolutely superb film. Watch it and learn, my citizens. And laugh, marvel, and expand. Yeah, baby!
