Xander Berkeley (Mario) strikes the perfect balance as a composer/teacher trying to inspire whatever talent and creativity might be inside a student. Reviewing this movie as a professional musician for 40+ yrs, he reminded me of the people who helped me find my creative core. The movie shows the struggle (all pros go thru it) of Jerry who doesn't know if he has "it" in order to have a future that might even pay the bills.

A charming valentine to those who work so tirelessly behind the scenes to enhance our movie going experience! Perfectly cast and beautifully staged with period detail. Hollywood in the 1940s was full of refugee artists who brought European classicism to the creative process. A fine portrait of one of those artists. Well done, Mr. Berkeley!

I watched this movie with a friend and it is a great emotional film. This film tells a story that is very relatable. It speaks to the fear that everyone has about trying to succeed and the struggle of recognition. It also provides a window into a part of music and film history that is often left as a footnote.

The Maestro tells the fascinating story of two real-life composers. Songwriter Jerry Herst is instructed and mentored by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, an Italian who fled his home country during WWII. I was impressed by the performances of both leads. Xander Berkeley as Castelnuovo-Tedesco conveyed a wonderful warmth and naturalism. Herst as played by Leo Marks came across as a likable and relatable young man, doing his best to handle the difficulties of pursuing a creative career. After watching this film, I became interested enough in both characters to look up their biographies on Wikipedia.I loved the film’s soundtrack, full of beautiful music of all types. I recommend this movie for anyone who loves music or films about artists, musicians, and other creatives.

Think of the countless times the music on the ‘big screen’ has swept us up !?! John Williams, for example, composer of the Star Wars music ! And Raiders of the Lost Ark. And other remarkble composers, in addition to Williams : Henry Mancini, Andre’ Previn and the list goes on. THIS movie, The Maestro, tells the story about their teacher! And it’s a story about one of his students who asked the question: ‘Is becoming a lifetime composer my fate? I had the pleasure to be acquainted with the screen play writer which eventually led me and several others to help produce this film.
