This is a heartwarming Christmas movie that you can watch anytime and the entire family can watch, as well. It took me on a journey back to the 70's and gave a moving story mainly about three sad souls that intertwine due to certain melancholy & humorous circumstances at the same time. I'm very picky about endings of movies and this one left me delighted at how the characters revealed themselves to each other and became unsuspecting aids in helping one another in finding new paths to move forward with their lives. Each character became willing to let go of the life they had planned for themselves to embrace a new life that was waiting for them.

The brilliant Paul Giamatti does not disappoint in this unique and well made film. The period correct scenery and quirky characters are very entertaining. It's not your typical holiday movie, but I think those are so overdone that this film is a breath of fresh air.

Get ready to be transformed back to New England in the early 70's. The 3 main characters (Paul Giamatti, Da'Vine Joy Randolph and Dominic Sessa) are amazing actors and this film is believable and the cinematography is excellent. Three troubled characters remain behind during Christmas break at Barton Academy--a boarding school that Giamatti attended years ago on a scholarship. By the end of the film the characters help each other in their disparate issues, which most in the audience can relate to. If you enjoy other Alexander Payne films (The Descendants, About Schmidt, Sideway and Nebraska) you'll love this one as well. 5 *****'s
