Wow, possibly Oldman's finest performance. This is what won Oldman his 2018 Academy Award for BEST ACTOR and several other major acting awards! Just in case you don't know, Oldman plays Commissioner Gordon in all of the Batman films. He also does the voice over of the heroic Russian solder, Sgt. Reznov in the CALL OF DUTY video game series!!If you don't know anything about World War II or Churchill, read a little about World War II, prior to the entry of England into the war (and the bombing of London) and Churchill first, then watch this film! Truly awesome acting, great scenery and costumes. I can't say enough about this film and Oldman's performance!

This was the best movie I have watched in a while. Engaging! I have never been a big history buff, but as of lately I have been interested revisiting all those history facts I had learned about in college and high school. I have always wondered why Churchill was hated but loved and why he didn't win reelection. This movie shows the reality of the state of affairs during World War 2 and the need to have someone with balls to lead England. Gary Oldman did too good of a job at mumbling that at times I had to enable the subtitles in order to understand what he was saying. I highly recommend to watch and then go watch the Iron Lady.

There is so much more to tell about the "man who saved the West," but this just focuses on the very beginning of Churchill's stint as PM. It demonstrates convincingly that it wasn't a cake walk for the guy. But thank God for him, as he was able to rally the British people and helped them punch above their weight in the fight with Hitler. Interesting to see the dynamics with the British Crown in this film as they move from dismay at his ascension to relief that here was a man that would fight. Oldman is totally convincing as Churchill. A tour-de-force among a large number of film portrayals. You'll like it.

Saw this movie twice in theater and it is a 'MUST HAVE' for any serious film buff ... stunning acting, script, directing, cinematography ... a true historic masterpiece. Almost flawless film. The film writers claim to have carefully researched Churchill and felt the scenes accurately depicted his interactions personally and politically. Apparently, Churchill DID wander off occasionally ... the one moment which was NOT believable to me was an exchange on a train with a black person. While I would like to think that a good man like Churchill might behave like that, given the time period and sentiments it is unlikely he had such an exchange with a black person in a group setting - a moment where forced inclusion did not enhance a movie but made me question it.

Gary Oldman deserved the Oscar he won. When I saw him on the Hollywood stage, I would hardly have believed the movie character was the same man. I liked Lily James and Kristen Scott Thomas, too; their performances were very strong.I do quite a lot of reading about World War II. This movie covers the time period people hear much less about: the eve of war for Britain when Churchill struggled to persuade the British parliament that the only way to deal with Hitler was war. I heard some twenty-somethings make fun of this movie recently, and that dismayed me. May they one day have the courage to stand up to tyranny even half as well as Churchill and his generation did.

My husband and his brother both love history and do a lot of reading. They both enjoyed the portrayal of Winston Churchill and the turning point in a battle that was nearly lost at Dunkirk. We all recommend purchasing it. Very riveting story.

This is a deeply moving evocation of some of the most considered events in history. There is a tendency to view the British struggle in the early days of World War II as a lesson in heroism and far-sightedness, but it is easy to forget the uncertainties and terrors that abounded, and the siren song of the appeasers like Neville Chamberlain and Viscount Halifax. This movie reminds us of those, and of the human frailties that Winston Churchill had to overcome to lead his nation. As noted, Gary Oldman's performance as Churchill is extraordinary, but every character in this ensemble delivers an impeccable turn, and the whole is so well-wrought that it takes on the quality of legend. Don't miss it.
