Good movie.

This was really a good movie and educated me about a time in Reconstruction after the US Civil War when poor whites and blacks banded together to establish a free state against some pretty horrific odds. Matthew McConaughey was quite good in his role and the others pretty convincing as well. I recommend everyone to see this movie.

This movie is fantastic. The true story of Newton Knight is so crazy. As, a history teacher I show some of this film to my students to stress the horrifying details of the Civil War and the south to them. The movie worked perfectly. I have been buying most of my movies from and have yet to be disappointed.

This was a good movie. The preview made it seem like there was a little more action than it actually had, but the story line was good. We enjoyed it. It definitely earns the R rating but that is really only the first 15 minutes or so of the movie - after that it is a bit tamer.

Since I love Matthew McConaughey that alone is worth one star. However I highly recommend the movie. The story is non fiction and provides insight on how a farmer who did not own a big plantation and was not pro slavery (fought against it) in the 1800s survived. Newt Knight's story is not one you hear about in history class but should be taught.

One of my favorite movies ever. I made my 2 sons watch it and I’ve watched it several times so I could have friends watch it. His story should be told and should’ve been in school history books, in my opinion.

A great movie based on true events! A great story about the civil war that I never knew! A lot of action with a lot of courageous men and women that tried to change the things that were going so wrong during the war!! I enjoyed this movie very much!

So good! I bought this movie to add to my Law class this semester as we focus on the Second Amendment and I’m so glad I did! It’s excellent for discussions about the right to bear arms and civil rights. I know the kids will get into it too. I’m excited for the discussion!!

Although this movie is very long, every second of it is well crafted and acted. The Free State of Jones depicts true events as a man battled not only for his rights but inadvertently for the rights of others in the face if injustice. The main story is interwoven with some future events that depict clearly that although slavery was abolished by law the evil practiced continued unabated for many years.
